4/17/2024 0 Comments Rigs of rods car mods wixIn fact 2 of the IH sponsored/developed race engines that run at higher rpm's on a steady basis actually have some different methods of dealing with this. One of the "fixes" is to run about 1 to 1 1/2 quarts over the full line. IH tried to fix this after 74 but with limited results in the Scout due to its dual sump oil pan. All the oil ends up in the valve covers and valley pan area not properly oiling the valve train. What happens is that the sv motors basically pump themselves dry of oil. Mike or Jeff can probably give you a more detailed answer but it sounds like to me that you are getting oil starved. Drew izza pooter geek and knows this kinda schnizz but he's a lesser noob regarding auto mechanics 101 and is in basic training right now! That will continue for him in my shop this coming weekend! One of our members here, drew, is working up a video file tp post regarding typical rocker assembly lubrication observations. If you are gonna pop the valve covers (the only way to diagnose for proper rocker assembly lube), review the document I've posted here as a downloadable. Are simply manifestations of the root cause! Are root causes.flat cams, bent push rods, stuck valves, noisy/collapsed lifters, "squeaks", dead cylinders, "cupped" lifters, low compression, crazy manifold vacuum readings, "knocks", etc. But.the common threads."cam bearings shot ta hell", and "plugged rocker shaft assemblies". But the same type problemas are experienced by everyone playing in this IH sandbox, if ya don't have "lifter noise" right now.either your motor is dead or ya just ain't heard it yet!Īnd the "root cause" for any one particular engine/lifter noise issue can be considerably different, there is no one magic bullet. Our forum has grown tremendously in the last few months and I can no longer stay on top of everyone's issues. So I wanna put all the factual info in one place so that it's easily referenced and searched. There are several forum participants here right now dealing with this same or similar "lifter noise" issues. That thread will be evolving fairly rapidly, depending upon how much the phone rings and how fast the email comes flyin' in! And diagnosing that general complaint is what we'll be doing in the future in this thread: Now.there are many other issues that are manifested in "lifter noise". This problem does not exist with a regular front sump or rear sump pan, only the sii with a double sump pan. Ya can simply re-Mark yore dipstick at the time of an oil change and then use seven quarts instead of six, in other words, one quart "overfull". That keeps adequate oil in both sumps all the time. The IH engineering workaround in the service bulletin? Run an extra quart of oil.a nominal seven quarts when an oil change is done with a filter replacement. Slow the motor down, they all come back to life (eventually).classic oil starvation, same as happens when ya get about "two quarts low". When that happens, the main oil galleries and lifter galleries are momentarily starved for oil and one or more lifters will begin to collapse. As oil is slow to return to the pan, quite a bit of oil can be "trapped" in the front sump (over a quart and a half/two quarts, some of those pans have two drain plugs, some had only a single.is that dum or what?), thus the oil pump pickup is not continually submerged and tries to suk air/blowby. The double hump pan allows the oil to be picked up from only a single sump (the rear). That is not a "problem" just a fact of the design! Holds a lotta oil up in the rocker chambers. The IH sv motor is kinda restrictive in it's ability to "return" oil to the crankcase/pan at continuous high rpm (say 1800rpm and above). There are many scenarios/root causes for "lifter noise", that is why it's imperative that a diagnostics be performed, otherwise it's a simple clusterfook which the "other site" is full of!īut.if you are specifically referencing a Scout II engine app only, with the double hump pan, that sitch is "unique" and was addressed inna roundabout fashion by IH inna service bulletin format way back in the day, this info was never published in any service manual. I'm currently attempting to put up factual stuff in a couplea threads here ron that deal with the entire lubrication issue for all IH I-4/sv motors. I don't frequent "the other site" any longer.but I know what's been posted and regurgitated hundreds of times over the years! And only part of it is anywhere close to fact!
